Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions, which can complicate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Overlapping symptoms can make it difficult to determine whether a behavior is best understood as part of OCD, another condition, or multiple co-occurring conditions. This course will review common comorbidities in pediatric OCD and provide strategies for differential diagnosis, with an emphasis on understanding the function, context, and developmental course of symptoms rather than relying on the appearance of behavior alone. The course will conclude by briefly discussing considerations for applying exposure and response prevention (ERP) for OCD while considering comorbid presentations. Clinical examples will be used throughout to illustrate assessment, case conceptualization, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning.
